Automatic bill paying – have you had trouble with it?
ByToday I received a call from someone who I pay a mortgage to each month. They usually receive their payment from my Washington Mutual checking account on the 25th of the month. To have the check still not received over 10 days later is alarming. I can’t write them a replacement check because the funds have already been debited from my account. As I write this I’m on hold with the support line for online banking.
I’d like to think this is an isolated incident, but this is the second time something similar has happened with my online bill paying. My word to the wise – be careful with online bill pay and don’t trust your critical transactions to this service!
If anyone knows of another great way to transfer funds to people on a regular basis – an Electronic Transfer Service of some kind – please let me know!

I tried to set this up a year ago and had so much trouble with it that I decided it just wasn’t going to be a good idea. I like to have sense of where my money is going and how much also, which I think this would disconnect me from a bit. It would be very convenient, though…

I had a pretty easy time setting it up… however, correcting it when it goes wrong can be a challenge.
I have had 2 problems with it since Thanksgiving…
First – I had payments coming out of a closed checking account and bouncing when people tried to cash them.
Second – This time around I have people who didn’t recieve the check in the mail 2 weeks after the payment was due. It’s taken me over an hour on the phone with WAMU to try to resolve and I still don’t know if the recipients got the payment. I will check in with them today… and probably have another call with the bank tomorrow.
It’s convenient when it works, but I wouldn’t stake my good credit on it…
